Dear Mayor Cava, Chairman Rodriguez, and Commissioners,
I am a cyclist, a resident of Miami-Dade County, and a member of the Everglades Bicycle Club.
Miami-Dade County is one of the most dangerous places to ride a bicycle in the United States of America.
Every day I ride my bicycle on our streets, I am at great risk of injury or death.
I have heard that Miami-Dade County is essentially cutting the only effective cycling-safety initiative, Bike305 and manager Sue Kawalerski out of the budget. This is a mistake.
Bike305 is THE link between the cycling community and our county government.
Bike305 Manager Sue Kawalerski has been a visible and effective presence in the cycling community for years and has always been available and helpful whenever there have been
safety issues, particularly on the popular roadways cyclists use, like the Rickenbacker Causeway.
Through Bike305’s work with the cycling community and the free bicycle helmet distribution program, Bike305 has likely saved lives.
Bike305 and Sue Kawalerski are woven into the fabric of safe-cycling in Miami-Dade County.
Please do not rip out this important and effective public safety initiative and manager from our community.
Thank you.
