Biography

Here is a glimpse back at those early years of the
Everglades Bicycle Club
(Pictures and history provided by Frank Marques)

The above photograph was taken on the opening weekend of Larry and Penny Thompson Park, Perrine, Florida, summer, 1979.

A great bunch of people and a picture that is the essence of what the EBC was in those early days - people out cycling those long rural routes, not for speed (except for Jim, maybe!), enjoying each other's company and the love of cycling and nature on warm, quiet (yes, quiet) south Florida afternoons - great memories!

In the above photograph, with her back to the camera is Betty (who moved to North Carolina with husband Vern about 10 years ago). Sitting next to Betty is Evelyn (who is now living in the Redland, about a block from Knaus Berry Farm - what a life!), and finally, sitting next to Evelyn is Janet (who also moved to North Carolina in 1999).

Clockwise, from upper right (standing) is Max, who is no longer with us, and sitting next to him is Mack, who now lives in Nashville. Incidentally, I believe that Mack is wearing one of the original EBC T-shirts, with the alligator on a bicycle logo (as shown above). Next to Mack is Jim (wearing the original bright orange EBC Jersey - a classic. _____________________________________________________________
The below photo was taken by Tom (Maryanne's husband) at Clearwater Lake during the 1977 Florida Touring Festival. In the front row (from left) are: Janet, Mack (both wearing the original yellow EBC t-shirt), Jack (wearing a South Florida Wheelmen jersey - the club prior to the EBC), Jeffie (wearing the first-generation EBC jersey), Betty, Rene', Shelly (wearing a hand-made jersey), and Carla.

In the middle row (from left) are: Jim, Bart, and Elaine (white shirt).

In the back row (from left) are: Linda, George, Roberta, Tony, Rick, Bill, Melody, Vern, Frank, and Maryanne.

By 1979 the club had grown to about 225 members, with most of the original group from 1976 still active as well, as the above photo taken at Clearwater Lake illustrates.
